Self Advocacy
Self Advocacy means speaking up and speaking out for your rights. Many people with developmental disabilities who are speaking up for their rights call themselves “self-advocates.” It is important to note that although a person with a disability may call upon the support of others , the person is entitled to be in control of their own resources and how they are directed. It is about having the right to make life decisions without undue influence or control by others.
A number of self advocates , who received supports and services from Community Living Parry Sound developed their own Bill of Rights. These are the rights they felt were very important . These rights have been adopted by the agency and people are supported to learn about these rights and what to do when someone restricts their rights.
